The Reality of School Guidance and Counseling In Ethiopia Education System; based own experience.

                                  Introduction

Guidance and counselling service are the most diluted and undermined profession throughout the country Ethiopia. Even though the research and study haven’t more revealed that, I would like to write and give my own reflection from where I worked on.



I will begin from my first work place where as recruited junior fresh graduate teacher at one secondary school. I have almost two years of work experience in my career in general and with this two years of work experience I have been in two different work area which is both in educational setting. My first work or career start at Delo Mena high school which is found in Bale Zone ,Oromia region , Ethiopia and my second work area until a current day at Asella College of Teacher Education and also works as voluntary counsellor in one prison for inmates (Prisoner) for about five months.

Here in this school there are many students in favour of guidance and counselling service through my experience of only one year. I have observed many student facing addicted behaviour, personality problems, maladjustment, poor study habit, and lack of knowledge of one’s aptitudes add skills. As a result it’s good to build appropriate guidance and counselling service into this secondary school for the development of the adolescent student into an adult personality, intellectual functioning and proficiency, discipline and confidence in general

I face many challenges when I provide the guidance and counselling services, the challenge were mainly emerges from school director, teachers, students and the woreda educational bureau expertise. To further elaborate the barriers; there is lack of administrative problems, attitude of teachers, poor awareness of students and lack of resources can be mentioned as potential barrier I have been observed during my experience.


Generally when I try to conclude on the above reflections, a proper policy strategies should have to be developed at the national level for the implementation of school guidance and counselling at all level of educational placement, budget should be allocated for the perfect implementation of the programme, appropriate facilities should be fulfilled by the woreda educational expertise for effective counselling, awareness raising training for students , teachers , school director in regarding to the rational for school guidance , benefits and creating a conducive environment for the implementation of the services are a crucial and important points.
